Lift up the people

03 / About The Operator-Athlete

Built one company on a bicycle. Now leading three on the same instinct.

Phil Dumontet running the Boston Marathon
128th Boston Marathon Bib 1989 · Team Hoyt

I started DASHED on a bike in Boston in 2009 with a Rubbermaid container and one restaurant. We grew it into the largest privately-owned restaurant delivery platform in the Northeast — 700+ restaurants, named to the Inc. 5000 five years running — before selling to Grubhub.

In 2017, I moved to Boulder. I came for the running. I stayed because I realized the entire endurance industry was about to be rebuilt — and I wanted to build the companies that would do it.

I founded Boulderthon a few years later. 1,600 runners in year one. 17,000 today. Then Brooksee, where we now produce 8 of America's marquee marathons. Then Laurel, our AI-powered race technology platform now powering 250+ events worldwide. And The Future of Running podcast on Head Start — where I sit down with the CEOs shaping the next era of the sport.

The thesis is the same across all of it: endurance events are some of the most powerful storytelling moments in sports, and the future belongs to operators who can deliver them with technology, taste, and an obsessive focus on the runner experience.

50,000 Hollywood feature films stand on the start line in New York — start telling them. The biggest barrier to running isn't cost; it's the belief you're not a runner.

№ 03
Jack Fleming
CEO · Boston Athletic Association
The #1 reason people don't sign up for a marathon: fear of finishing last. Why the 5:30pm finish matters as much as the 9:30am one — and how Boston passes itself down generationally.
10 Lessons
№ 04
Mike Nishi
COO · Bank of America Chicago Marathon
"We're not race organizers — we're stage builders." The goal: 100% of participants running for someone or something. Plant something now that grows for the next 50 years.
10 Lessons
№ 05
Scott DeRue
CEO · The IRONMAN Group
Stop trying to improve the broadcast — start building fandom. What Taylor Swift built is what endurance sports should aspire to. The path to a billion people moving runs through the developing world.
10 Lessons
№ 06
Hugh Brasher
Director · London Marathon
A marathon should run with the city, not through it. Excellence at scale means an individual experience for 56,000 people. The future will be shaped by technology — but defined by feeling.
10 Lessons
№ 07
Wayne Larden
Race Director · TCS Sydney Marathon
18 years of patient foundation-building before the rocket launched. Don't try to be the biggest — try to be the best and the most fun. Sometimes the name of your race is scaring people away.

Ted Metellus
Race Director · TCS New York City Marathon
"People will never forget how you made them feel." Treat your repeat runners like Delta treats their million-milers. Anybody can point — not everybody can lift.

№ 09
Stacey Embretson
Race Director · LA Marathon
The course is the product — start there and don't compromise. Hot weather plans aren't contingencies anymore — they're the baseline. The tiny thing keeps you up at night, not the big stuff.

Bill Quinn
Futurist · TCS
Ask "what if" today so you never ask "what now" tomorrow. Edible hydration pods. Digital twins running millions of what-if scenarios on your race. The goal isn't a bigger slice — it's a bigger pie.

Chris Robb
Founder · Mass Participation World
"We are not race organizers — we are health and wellbeing infrastructure." The most underserved person at your event is the fan, not the runner. Stop treating first-time participants as a finish line.
